Issues in Disability
A discussion of psychosocial issues faced by families, children, young adults, and professionals in working with CYND/RD. Trainees will engage in role-plays and interactive activities.

Transition:
The Young Adult Experience
Transition issues faced by young adults with special health care needs will be discussed. Young adults will comment on their experiences with transition and the challenges they have faced.

Young Adults will describe personal experience with their own transition.

Legislative Activities
Participate in at least 8 hours of some part of the legislative process. Trainees must meet for 1 hour each with at least 2 trainees from other sites to discuss their legislative experiences.

Seminar 15

Challenges for Leadership
Further discussion of challenges in providing effective leadership. Trainees will engage in small group discussions regarding their developing leadership skills and how they can refine skills. Role-play activities related to leadership.

Parent Directed Clinic
Trainees will interact with a family in an interdisciplinary format. Trainees are expected in paripating in two of these clinics over the course of the year.

Autism: Screening Assessment Tools
An overview and discussion of screening tools including general developmental screeners (e.g., ASQ) as well as Autism specific screeners (MCHAT), and “level 2” screeners (e.g., CARS, GARS, GADS, ASDS). As part of this discussion trainees will conduct reviews of various screeners and briefly present on psychometrics so that broad array of screeners get covered and trainees learn how to evaluate measures.

The Educational Process – Special Education and 504
A discussion of services available through special education programs. Each trainee will review/present on a portion of the special education law. Parents of CYND/RD will share their views on special education.
